Cambridge Latin vs Lowell

In competitions all over the state, high school basketball teams are battling for MIAA championship positions. This week Cambridge Latin hosted Lowell in their game at home. With a final score of 74 to 68, Cambridge Latin will advance to the next round.

American East Championship

Boston University is playing host this weekend to schools from all over New England in the American East Swimming and Diving Championship. Tonight was the men’s 2.5 meter diving championship and the relay 8×8 team event and while the events will continue through Sunday, these teams put on quite a display as they battled through events. Good luck to all the teams!

BC Eagles vs BU Terriers Men’s Ice Hockey

Friday night January 22nd the Boston College Men’s Ice Hockey Eagles hosted the Boston University Terriers. In a packed stadium in Brighton of almost nine thousand screaming fans the Eagles battled the Terriers in three periods only to lose to the Terriers 5-4 in a two minute over time.

Somerville’s Vigil for Haiti

On January 18th, 2010 the town of Somerville in association with the Somerville Public Schools and the Somerville Public Trauma Response Network held a Vigil for those affected and mourning the people of Haiti at the Somerville High School. Lead by Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and with speakers Reverend Exenor P. Fevrier of the Evangelical Haitian Church of Somerville and the Haitian Coalition of Somerville, the well attend assembly joined in song of Amazing Grace and was treated to a musical selection by the True Light Choir by the Mission Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ who last performed at Mayor Thomas Menino’s inaugural ceremony.

Coakley- Clinton Rally

On January 15 2010 just four days before the Massachusetts goes to the polls on January 19th in a special election to elect a new junior senator to fulfill the seat left empty by the passing of senior senator Ted Kennedy’s passing last year, lead democrats gathered in a rally head at the Fairmont Copley Hotel in Downtown Boston to support the democrat candidate Martha Coakley.
Coakley was supported not only by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino but by Governor Deval Patrick and Senator John Kerry. Also on hand was special guest President Bill Clinton adding a bit of national party star power to Coakley’s campaign.

India

In an untraditional way to celebrate Thanksgiving a bunch of photographers headed east to Mumbai, India in November over Thanksgiving to work with a Non-profit organization (NGO) named CORO to help illustrate the problems faced by numerous smaller NGO’s under the umbrella of CORO. CORO addresses everything from literacy, water issues, rebuilding within some of Mumbai’s poorest areas, sex workers, and gender equality, our contribution of following stories documented by our pictures for the time that we were in India was to add some semblence of publicity and awareness to these issues and what is needed to power and drive CORO’s success.

As a photographer I chose to focus on family issues and what home life and what the face of these poorest areas looked like. The attached gallery is a small sampling of some of the energy and eternal amazing joy I found on the faces and in the lives of these people who live in conditions that you or I wouldn’t even imagine much less call home and raise our children in. Yet I found some of the most loving, generous, and beautiful people in the world among these conditions and want to share their faces with you.

Mike’s “Open Mike” Night

In less than thirty days Massachusetts will go to the polls to elect a new junior senator to fulfill the seat left by the late Ted Kennedy. In what has proved to be a crowded race, especially on the democrat side of the aisle, candidates are searching for each and every vote and how to get their message out to the voters who may or may not know all the faces contending for the second of two seats Massachusetts has in the United States Senate.

Among the Democratic candidates in former mayor and alderman from Somerville and current congressman Mike Capuano. In one of his attempts to get his message out to the voter, Capuano’s campaign held an RSVP “open mike” night at the Park Plaza with nearly 1200 in attendance. The hour and a half event was also attended by special campaign guests former Massachusetts First Lady Kitty Dukakis and the Congressman’s nephew Hollywood actor Chris Evans, both in attendance to lend their support. The former Massachusetts was welcomed to the stage with the Congressman and his wife, opening for him by endorsing Capuano and his campaign.

The special election will be held December 8th.

Detroit- Halloween Weekend 2009

Three people, two countries, and one car…. So started my journey as a group of photographers set off from Boston to drive to Detroit Michigan ( through Canada ) to witness and document what has been known as Devil’s Night. A tradition that spreads across the mid-west but takes on a distinctly hot trend in Detroit.

With the failing economy, failing auto industry, and mass housing crisis that has hit so much of the country, Detroit has seen a definite turn in their history over the course of the last twenty years leaving the city much in ruin and building after building abandoned and boarded up. As Detroit struggles to keep up, Halloween weekend and the tradition of Devil’s Night has the additional threat of fire in the Michigan city. Leaving a landscape of literally burned and scarred houses and storefronts all across the metro region.

We set out to get more information about Detroit and how an American city could be so close to the brink without anyone noticing. While we were there we followed Engine house 23 while they proved why Detroit has the busiest, and best, fire department in the nation.

The following are a sampling of what I came back with and the beauty in the destruction of Detroit.

Head of the Charles 2009

On a very bipolar weekend of October 17th and 18th boat clubs from all over the US came together at the Cambridge Boat Club’s annual Head of the Charles Regatta held on the Charles River in Cambridge. The three mile race was held over two days and challenged rowers in various classes from single rowers to sweeps 8′s for both high school through masters level for both men and women. While saturday delievered a beautiful stereotypical new england fall day with plenty of brisk fall air and sunshine for the rowers to form picture perfect events, Sunday opened to the trickery of new england weather. With tremendous downpours, cold sweeping winds, and increasing storms as the day wore on including the first snow flakes the city of Boston would see this fall/winter- sunday’s competition continued on in tribute to the strength and dedication of the athletes and the spirit of the event.

The Head of the Charles managed to successfully, once again be completed this year marking another annual fall tradition in Boston. To all the rowers, congratulations. To all the spectators who made it out and supported, thank you and here’s to another successful Head of the Charles next year!

Marching of the Elephants

Every year the circus comes to town. Something little children and fans alike look forward to as the Red Sox wind down, the Pats start up and the Celts and Bruins hit the road, there is a small window when Barnum and Bailey roll into town and take over the TD Garden. But there is another tradition little know to Bostonians that may be even more exciting to some and well worth braving the cold, as this photographer did last night, it’s called the March of the Elephants.

While published in the local papers and made known to the general public, only a handful of people and a whole lot of Boston’s finest turned out last night around seven o’clock to watch as Barnum and Bailey’s finest marched their stars a handful of elephants down Storrow drive and into the back of the garden to the delight of the small crowd collected. Posing for pictures and showing off their talents of marching together, the pack of Barnum’s finest huddled in the cold before being marched up the ramp on the back side of the garden along with Barnum’s horses, a couple of clowns, the ring master, and box after box of mysterious supplies.

If last night is any indication, fun and excitment await all at the Barnum and Bailey Circus appearing at the TD Garden over the next coming days!
